About Boyi Molefe

A journey through South African art, from oil painting to woodcut mastery

Boyi Molefe at work

“Through woodcut printing, I found a way to express the depth and texture of South African stories.”

The Artist

My artistic journey began in 1986 in Durban, where I first explored my creative voice through oil painting. Those early years were foundational, teaching me the importance of color, composition, and storytelling through art.

In 2015, I experienced a profound artistic transformation when I discovered woodcut printing. The medium's raw, tactile nature and its connection to traditional African art forms immediately resonated with me, leading to a complete reinvention of my artistic practice.

Today, from my outlet at the Watershed in Cape Town, I continue to explore the possibilities of woodcut printing, creating works that bridge traditional techniques with contemporary narratives.

The Process

Design process

Design & Sketching

Each piece begins as a detailed sketch, carefully planned to translate into the woodcut medium.

Carving process

Wood Carving

The design is meticulously carved into wood blocks, a meditative process that can take several days.

Printing process

Printing

The final stage involves hand-printing each piece, making every print unique and special.
